eople who had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within the past year who engaged in 2 consecutive days of fasting and 5 days of typical eating including 1 meal replacement lowered their glycated hemoglobin A1c levels more after 4 months than did those who received metformin or empagliflozin, a recent study found. Participants who engaged in intermittent fasting and meal replacement also lost more weight than did those in either the metformin or empagliflozin groups.
The results were based on data from 405 participants with overweight or obesity in China who ate 1 low-calorie meal replacement product—a prepackaged food between 500 and 600 calories—for 2 days in a row each week. For the rest of the week, participants ate their usual breakfast and lunch but swapped their dinner for a different meal replacement product.
The intervention “may potentially serve as an effective initial lifestyle intervention instead of antidiabetic drugs for early-stage type 2 diabetes,” the researchers wrote in JAMA Network Open.
